Aligarh, a city in Uttar Pradesh, India, 120 km/75 mi southeast of Delhi;
population (2001) 667,700. Industries include agricultural manufacturing

Muslim
University was founded here in 1875 as the Anglo-Oriental College.
There are ancient Buddhist and Hindu remains, but records
of the town date only from 1194, when it was a Rajput stronghold
administered by Muslim governors. The old city was named Koil, and was
mentioned by Ibn Battuta in 1342;
Aligarh,
meaning ‘high fort’, was the name attached to the fort built in 1524. It
passed from the Moguls to the Marathas, and was taken by the British under

Aligarh Fort
Aligarh Fort one of the strongest forts in
India,
is also called "Aligarh Qila". It is situated on the Grand Trunk road and
consists of a regular polygon, surrounded by a very broad and deep ditch.
It was built during the time of Ibrahim Lodhi by Muhammad, son of Umar the
governor of Kol, in 1524-25. Sabit Khan who was the governor of this
region during the time of Farrukh Siyar and Muhammad Shah, further rebuilt
the fort. It became a fortress of great importance under Madhavrao I
Scindia in 1759, and was the depot where he drilled and organized his
battalions in the European fashion with the aid of French soldier Benot de
Boigne.
During the Battle of Ally Ghur, it was captured from the
Marathas under the leadership of a French officer Perron by
Lord Gerard Lake"s
British army, in September 1803, since which time it has been much
strengthened and improved. In the rebellion of 1857 the troops stationed
at Aligarh mutinied.
Aligarh Muslim
University Campus
Aligarh Muslim University Campus has the specimens of science, sculptures,
terracotta, paintings, textiles and coins in display. A library is
attached to the museum.
Chacha Nehru Gyan Pushp
Chacha Nehru Gyan Pushp, established in 1982, is an
educational museum located on Ramghat road in
Aligarh. It has an
assortment of specimens relating to geography, biology and history. Items
on display are stamps, coins, rocks, minerals, shells, gems, stones,
medals, photocopies of paintings and various drawings, science instruments
and equipments, audio visual aids, and dresses of different ages.
Naqvi Park
Naqvi Park is situated on the approach to University Campus.
The Mangalayatan
The Mangalayatan, a Jain pilgrimage complex, is run by Shri
Adinath Kund-Kund Kahan Digamber Jain Trust at
Aligarh. It is one of
the largest Jain religious centers of its kind in India. Spread over an
area of 80,000 square yards, the complex is a destination for devotional,
social service, educational and socio-religious research activities.
